The Davidson Center for Space Exploration
This building now houses our fully restored Saturn V. Scheduled to open in
January 2008, the Davidson Center for Space Exploration will become the new
front door for the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) complex, housing the
visitor ticketing area and a 350-seat auditorium, along with the Saturn V rocket.
Completion of this 68,200-square-foot building is the first stage in a USSRC plan
to better showcase NASA and Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC)
contributions to historical, current, and future space. The USSRC plans to use
the 42,000-square-foot exhibit space beneath the Saturn V rocket to show how
the lessons learned in the Apollo Program are affecting design and engineering
decisions in the current initiative to return to the moon. In order to present the
full story, the exhibits in the Saturn V Gallery will also show the evolution of
propulsion from the Saturn V to the shuttle and how that technology is being
adapted to the Ares rockets.
Donations are being accepted for the Gallery Exhibit Plan,
which is expected to cost $5.5 million.
